New acrylic alloy targets PC, copolyesters in IV lines

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013 | Permalink

A new acrylic alloy is taking direct aim at injection molded polycarbonate and copolyesters used in IV line components requiring chemical resistance. Tests of the new material from Altuglas International, a subsidiary of Arkema, indicate that the new material, called Altuglas Luctor, resists attack from alcohols, lipid emulsions, plasticizers, TPN solutions, and new-generation oncology drugs. Contact with flexible PVC tubing can be a particular problem for the two medical plastics most commonly used in IV assemblies. Tagging Options Domain:  All Sites read more

Bioplastic PHA puts new muscle in flexible PVC compounds

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013 | Permalink

New research from Metabolix is putting an interesting twist on the fitness-of-PVC-for-medical applications debate. Naturally produced plastics called polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) can be used as a modifier to significantly improve the physical properties of a PVC compound while simultaneously reducing the amount of phthalate plasticizers needed to make the material flexible for applications such as bags and tubing.
