A waste product from the papermaking industry could yield a safer and greener alternative to the petroleum-based chemical bisphenol-A (BPA), which is used in many products, including plastics. The new BPA alternative is made from a renewable source: lignin, the compound that gives wood its strength. Scientists described the research in a presentation on March 16 at the 247th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
